Sunday 16th October 2022 – Moralee Division

Billingham Stars 6 – YKK Widnes Wild 3

The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild had a frustrating trip to the north east on Sunday losing 6-3 to Billingham Stars in the NIHL Moralee Division.

Widnes actually had the upper hand for much of the game and opened the scoring with a goal from Joey Coulter right at the end of the first period.

Billingham equalised 2 minutes into the second period but then two more goals – from player coach Richard Haggar and Matty Barlow on 24 and 28 minutes respectively - saw Widnes edge into the lead.

The home side upped their game at this point and two goals from them – on 31 and 35 minutes - saw the scores tied at 3-3 after two periods – and everything still to play for in the final 20 minutes.

The third period was incredibly frustrating for Widnes as they had more of the play – outshooting Billingham by 20 to 8 over the 20 minutes – but were unable to find a way past the Stars’ netminder.

The home team, however, took the lead for the first time in the game on 42 minutes, extended the advantage on 49 and then added a 6th goal with just 1 minute left to play.

The resulting 6-3 defeat leaves Widnes with 3 wins and 3 losses from their 6 league games to date, with these early games also counting towards the qualifying group for the Moralee Cup this season.

The Wild have another away trip this Saturday 22nd October when they make the trip north of the border to Dumfries to play last season’s league champions Solway Sharks. They are then at home on Sunday 23rd October when they take on Billingham at Planet Ice Widnes, 5.30pm face off.

Ice hockey photographer Lauren Hagan – who covers the Widnes-based Mayhem sledge hockey (para) team - has set up a new dog-related initiative called “The Smokey Project” in memory of her rescued Staffordshire Bull Terrier of that name who died earlier this year.

The aim of The Smokey Project is to raise awareness of the plight of rescue dogs and to support various dog rescue charities or shelters each year across the north west and beyond.

This year Lauren is organising a "Shoeboxes for Shelter Dogs" appeal and is collecting donations that will be given to the Cheshire and Manchester Dogs' Home in Harpurhey, Manchester, in the run up to Christmas.

She has set up a “wishlist” on Amazon where people can donate by selecting items from the page and they will sent straight to Lauren for inclusion in her Shoebox packages - CLICK HERE

There is also a Twitter account that can be used to follow the progress of the project and to make contact about direct donations:
