The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild are pleased to announce the signing of new player Jonathan Williamson for the forthcoming 2022/23 NIHL season.
Williamson played for the Altrincham Aces in the Laidler Division last season, playing 20 games in all competitions where he scored 5 goals, 4 assists and picked up 17 penalty minutes.
Prior to that, the left handed defenceman spent two seasons with Sutton Sting, playing 49 games at Laidler and Moralee Division level and winning the Laidler Division title in 2018.
Williamson played his junior hockey at Peterborough and was selected for the South East Conference team three years running in 2009, 10 and 11. He played a season with the Peterborough Islanders in the NIHL South Division 2 and also made 3 appearances for the Peterborough Phantoms in the English Premier League, as the NIHL’s top division was then called.
He also played 4 seasons of University hockey with the Sheffield Bears team from 2012 to 2016, making 56 appearances and scoring 12+25.
Talking about switching to the Wild for the new season, Williamson said:
“After seeing the quality and depth the team has on the ice, with a great set up behind the scenes, I knew that this project was one I wanted to be a part of. With the success last year, I’m looking forward to helping the Wild progress and compete to win every game this year.”
Wild player coach Richard Haggar said of Williamson:
“I was very impressed with Johno at our trials. He works hard and isn’t afraid to get stuck in. His positional play is very good which fits in with the style of hockey we play at Widnes. He also had an excellent season with the Altrincham Aces last year so it was an easy decision to give him the chance to make that step up and play at this level as it is one he has earned.”
Jonathan Williamson will wear the number 18 shirt and his home, away and warm up shirts are available to “own and loan” at a cost of £80.00 per shirt for the season.
